Learning objectives

In this lesson

  • Make the complete lateral load path visible.
  • A complex model cannot rescue a poor concept.

Engineering explanation

A good concept makes inertia-force collection, diaphragm transfer, vertical resisting elements and foundation reactions explicit. Discontinuities create local demand regardless of model sophistication. Symmetry and uniform distribution of strength, stiffness and mass can reduce torsional sensitivity. Redundancy provides alternate resistance only when connections and diaphragms mobilize it. Structural separation must consider relative movement and pounding.

Key takeaways

What to carry forward

  • Make the complete lateral load path visible.
  • A complex model cannot rescue a poor concept.
  • Verify diaphragms and interfaces explicitly.
