Learning objectives

In this lesson

  • Choose the mechanism before isolated member sizing.
  • Protect brittle modes from credible ductile resistance.

Engineering explanation

Capacity design identifies regions allowed to yield and derives actions for brittle or non-dissipative components from the credible resistance of those regions. Actual resistance can exceed nominal demand because of material, section and system effects. The aim is a stable, inspectable mechanism. Capacity-protected elements therefore follow applicable capacity-design action rules rather than reduced elastic-analysis action alone. Analysis, reinforcement design, detailing and execution quality are inseparable.

Key takeaways

What to carry forward

  • Choose the mechanism before isolated member sizing.
  • Protect brittle modes from credible ductile resistance.
  • Analysis and detailing are inseparable.
