Purpose and performance objectives

Why seismic design manages performance and consequences rather than treating earthquake action as an ordinary static load.

Learning objectives

In this lesson

  • Seismic design coordinates strength, deformation and consequence.
  • Life safety does not imply damage-free response.

Engineering explanation

Earthquake-resistant design coordinates hazard, structural configuration, analysis, resistance and detailing. Its purpose is controlled behaviour under defined seismic situations, not a promise of zero damage. Life-safety and damage-limitation objectives address different response levels and consequences. Seismic inertia forces arise from mass and dynamic response, so reversals, cyclic degradation, deformation capacity and load-path continuity become central. Project acceptance criteria must always be read in the exact adopted Eurocode edition and National Annex context.

Key takeaways

What to carry forward

  • Seismic design coordinates strength, deformation and consequence.
  • Life safety does not imply damage-free response.
