Applied Projects

Practical engineering, consultancy and field work for safer buildings, bridges and infrastructure.

01 · BELASICA BRIDGE

Post-fire Structural Safety Assessment of the Belasica Bridge

A comprehensive assessment of fire-induced damage to the prestressed concrete bridge, integrating field inspection, testing and advanced structural analysis.

Assessment methods

Visual inspection, non-destructive and destructive testing, load testing, and finite-element and thermal modelling were combined to evaluate concrete spalling, exposed reinforcement and the condition of the prestressing cables.

Key outcome

The assessment found no cable relaxation or structural deformation that compromised load-bearing capacity. Rehabilitation therefore focused on restoring the protective concrete layer, preventing corrosion and extending the bridge’s service life.

02 · UNIVERSAL HALL

Post-fire Structural Integrity Assessment of the Universal Hall Dome in Skopje

A comprehensive assessment of the new 37.5-metre steel dome after the April 2024 fire, combining detailed visual inspection with laboratory testing of fire-exposed steel members.

Assessment methods

Columns, beams, dome arches, secondary members and ring elements were classified by damage level. Selected steel samples were tested for yield and tensile strength, elasticity and ductility, with particular attention to local swelling of closed hollow sections exposed to high temperature.

Key outcome

The primary load-bearing members showed no visible plastic deformation and retained their mechanical properties. No primary element required replacement or extensive repair; only a limited number of severely affected secondary elements were recommended for replacement.
